INTRODUCTION

Welcome to Mick’s Cottage and the campground at the shared Cascabel Conservation Association (CCA) and Archaeology Southwest (ASW) Baicatcan land preserve. This shared camp is here for the use and enjoyment of all Baicatcan partners as well as guests. In order to maintain the integrity of the wild land area and archaeological sites, all facilities are intentionally primitive.

campground

Camping amenities include potable water, picnic benches, space for tents, a cooking ramada, a fire pit, and a compost toilet. There is also a new shower building, complete with hand-fill solar-heated water. The cooking ramada is equipped with propane stoves, pots, pans, serving dishes, utensils and a first aid kit. Campground use must be reserved in advance, and is on a first-come first-served basis, with a maximum occupancy of 12 for the campground. Cost is $5 per person per night.

Individuals or small groups traveling on foot or bicycle through Cascabel may stay at the campground without reservations for up to two days. Hikers and bike packers should be familiar with the conservation easement provisions on the registration page.

About

Please note that the entire area is primitive. There is always a possibility of coming across some of the area’s wild inhabitants such as rattlesnakes, javelina, mountain lions,  Gila monsters, desert tortoise, scorpions, and vast array of other insects, including wild bees, and more.

While there are many amenities, there is no phone, electricity, wifi nor internet connection. You are responsible for your own safety and well-being.

Neither the parking area nor the campground area are suitable for large campers or trailers due to overhanging mesquite trees.

Dogs are not permitted for overnight guests.

Baicatcan is a community space. Guests should be comfortable and open to sharing it with others during their stay. Our Cascabel Community Garden is adjacent to the camp area, and gardeners may wander through at any time.

Conservation Easement

We are grateful to have a conservation easement with the Bureau of Land Management on this 130-acre parcel. We celebrate that historically important archeological features, as well as wildlife habitat, local travel ways, and migration corridors will be preserved and protected in perpetuity. The easement also limits development along the San Pedro River corridor, which conserves ground water within its watershed. There are provisions in the conservation easement that guests should be aware of before their visit. Guests will be asked to review these provisions when making reservations
